OUR STORY

Some Recipes Are Inherited. Others Are Earned.

Smoke & Cane began with a simple belief: the most valuable things in life are not invented. They’re passed down.

THE LESSON THAT STUCK

A Simple Ingredient. A Lasting Memory.

Near the end of the historic Chase Park Plaza renovation in St. Louis, a young tradesman found himself working alongside an older laborer named Jesse. Between masonry work, long days, and conversations about barbecue, Jesse shared one simple ingredient that stayed with him:

Brer Rabbit molasses.

It was a small lesson, but it stuck.

Years passed. Jobs changed. Families grew. But the memory of Jesse, those conversations, and that molasses never disappeared.

Decades later, that lesson became one of the inspirations behind Smoke & Cane.

THE NAME BEHIND THE STORY

Rooted in Smoke. Shaped by Cane.

The name carries more than one story. Smoke speaks to slow fire, patience, and the craft behind everything we make. Cane points to the sugar cane and molasses that inspired our first provision, but also to canebrakes—the dense stands of native cane that helped shape the Southern landscape. Together, Smoke & Cane connects fire, field, and a sense of place worth passing down.

THE STORY IS JUST BEGINNING

Provisions Worth Passing Down

Smoke & Cane is still young. The first provisions are still taking shape, and the story is only beginning.

But the purpose is already clear: preserve recipes, traditions, stories, and skills worth passing down.
